General Introduction
 
All applicants are required to take the KCST Entrance Test or submit the results obtained in recognized standard tests, such as TOEFL, IELTS or SAT.
KCST offers a Foundation Program for applicants who are not considered ready for registration in one of the degree programs. The results of the KCST Entrance Test or standard tests determine the level at which the applicant should join.
According to the test results, the applicant may be allowed to register in the chosen degree program, while still attending one of the courses in the Foundation Program.
 
The Foundation Program courses are as follows:
 
    Maths     : MA002 and MA003 
    Physics   : PHY002 and PHY003
    English   : LA002 and LA003
 
We advise ALL candidates to take the free practice tests.
 
The answers are also included, but you should attempt solving the questions before looking at the answers.

English Entrance Test
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES 

Introduction
 
KCST uses the TOEFL ITP® Level 1 test. TOEFL ITP tests are paper based and use 100 percent academic content to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. All questions are in multiple-choice format, with four answer choices per question. The tests evaluate skills in three areas:
  • Listening Comprehension - measures the ability to understand spoken English as it is used in colleges and universities
  • Structure and Written Expression - measures recognition of selected structural and grammatical points in standard written English
  • Reading Comprehension - measures the ability to read and understand academic reading material written in English.
 
TOEFL ITP tests are not based on the content of any particular English course but rather on your English language proficiency—your overall ability to use English. Improvement in proficiency may take some time and is generally achieved through a combination of practice and study.

Levels of knowledge required for admission
The table below shows the levels of proficiency in English language required for admission to the following levels at KCST:

(CEFR* level C1)
  • Can understand essential ideas and some difficult and abstract vocabulary in short academic lectures/conversations that require integration and synthesis.
  • Can understand ideas and detailed information in academic written texts, even texts on abstract topics containing low-frequency vocabulary.
  • Can monitor grammatical interactions among elements in complex written sentences.
  • Can recognize less common grammatical forms, such as subjunctive mood and reduced clauses, as well as necessary word choices not specified by general grammatical rules.
READY TO JOIN FOUNDATION ENGLISH LA 003
(CEFR* levels B1 and B2)
  • Can connect information across utterances from different speakers in short dialogues and can identify main ideas and details when reinforced in lectures and longer conversations.
  • In written texts containing high-frequency academic vocabulary, can connect details and ideas to understand information that is explicitly stated or implied.
  • Can recognize appropriate ways to vary written sentences using appositives, participles and subordinate clauses, and can demonstrate awareness of acceptable variations on basic grammatical rules.
  • Can understand clearly reinforced implications and common language functions in short dialogues containing high-frequency vocabulary and common idiomatic expressions.
  • Can understand simple process descriptions and narration in written texts containing high-frequency vocabulary.
  • Can recognize appropriate uses of verbs in common tenses — including passive forms — as well as common linking verbs and expletives such as "there is."
  • Can recognize the correct structure of a sentence or clause and the appropriate use of infinitives, gerunds and “that” clauses.
READY TO JOIN FOUNDATION ENGLISH LA 002
(CEFR* level A2)
  • Can sometimes understand explicitly stated information in written texts and short dialogues containing simple vocabulary.
  • Can sometimes understand main ideas when they are strongly reinforced in texts and short oral exchanges.
  • In simple contexts, can sometimes select the appropriate verb tense and correctly choose between singular and plural nouns.

Mathematics Entrance Test
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES
 
The KCST Mathematics Entrance Test is not intended to determine acceptance or rejection in the degree programs. It only determines the level of the candidate’s knowledge of general mathematical rules and principles. It also points the way for the building up of solid mathematical foundations for our science and engineering programs.
KCST offers two foundation math courses Math MA002 and MA003, for students who are not considered ready for registration in one of the degree programs. The results of the Entrance Test determine the level at which you should join.
 
Contents of the test
The test consists of twenty multiple choice questions divided into two levels – PART I and PART II – each consisting of ten questions.
The answers should be the result of a series of logical steps, and not just a random answer.
Students should submit also the logical steps followed in solving the questions of the test (i.e. the rough work).
The contents of the test are topics studied in the last two years in the high school, as follows:
  1. Properties of real numbers
  2. Polynomials
  3. Absolute values
  4. Complex numbers
  5. Equations
  6. Inequalities
  7. Functions
  8. Derivatives
  9. Integrations
  10. Applications (1): Areas, and volumes
  11. Application (2): Ratio, percentages and proportions
  12. Matrices: Operations, transpose, determinant, and inverse for 2x2 matrices  
  13. Basic concepts in probability and statistics
You are recommended to use calculator, pen and paper for these tests.

Physics Entrance Test
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES
Thank you for your interest in the KCST Physics Entrance Test.
The test aims to select the students and train them to gain a thorough foundation for their fundamental physics which is essential for KCST’s science and engineering programs.
The test is not intended to determine acceptance or rejection in the degree programs. It only determines the extent of the candidate’s grasp of fundamental principles of Physics.
The result of the Entrance test determines the level at which you should join.
 
Content of the Test
 
The question paper consists of 18 questions divided into two sections: section A (Part I comprising of 10 questions) and section B (Part II comprising of 8 questions).
 
The questions are to be answered in such a way that the blank space below each questions will reveal the steps used to solve the questions and shows how you have arrived at the answers
 
The topics in the content used for this entrance test are the topics the students would have studied in the intermediate physics courses in their high school. The approximate percentages of the test on the major content topics have been set based on the below scheme.
 
CLASSICAL MECHANICS [40% ]: units and dimensions, laws of motion, Newton’s laws, work, energy, oscillatory motion, central forces,  collisions, gravitation, waves, fluids, oscillations
HEAT AND THERMODYNAMICS & PROPERTIES OF MATTER [20%]: atoms, molecules, nucleus, temperature, heat, first law of thermodynamics
 
ELECTROMAGNETISM [30%]: electrostatics, properties of charge, coulomb’s law, gauss’s law, electric potential, combination of capacitors, currents, ohm’s law, combination of resistors, DC circuits, magnetic fields in free space, Lorentz force, induction,  electromagnetic waves
 
OPTICS [10%]: properties of light, light phenomena, refraction, lenses, mirrors.
