Professor Al-Begain has occupied a number of leading positions in international organisations. He is currently the President of the European Council for Modelling and Simulation (ECMS) and Past President of the Federation of European Simulation Societies (EuroSim). He was an advisor for the Welsh Government on major national projects such as the National Cybersecurity Academy and member of the WG Ministerial Advisory Steering Group for ICT in Schools. He is UNESCO Expert in networking, British Computer Society Fellow and Chartered IT Professional, Fellow of German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Senior Member of the IEEE, and member of the UK EPSRC College. He is on the Advisory Board of the Leadership Foundation for "Finances for Senior Managers in HE". He also acted as an Expert Witness in the major mobile IPR court cases between Nokia-InterDigital and Nokia-HTC.
He was the founder and chairman of the first National Welsh Industrial Cyber Security Summit, held in the prestigious Celtic Manor in  Newport, UK in 2014 organised jointly with Airbus, General Dynamics and the UK Cyber Security.

He has been the founder and director of the Centre of Excellence in Mobile Applications and Services (CEMAS) (2010-2015), rated as best managed centre in Wales. Till 2017, he was a Professor and the Director of the Centre of Excellence in Mobile and Emerging Technologies at the University of South Wales, UK. The two centres had a total funding of GBP13 million.

He received his PhD in Communications Engineering in 1989 from the Budapest Technical University, Hungary, and Postgraduate Diploma in Management from University of Glamorgan, UK in 2011. He also received the prestigious “Senior Strategic Leadership” certificate from the UK Leadership Foundation.

Prof Al-Begain won numerous awards including the John von Newman Computer Award in 1986 and the 2013  Inspire Wales Award for Science and Technology. In October 2006, he received Royal Recognition from Her Majesty The Queen for his contributions to the British scientific community.

Professor Al-Begain has a distinguished research and academic track record. He registered two granted patents, co-authored 2 books; edited 18 books, and authored more than 200 papers in refereed journals and conferences. He is the co-inventor of MOSEL: The Modelling, Specification and Evaluation Language. He supervised 28 successful PhD projects and over 150 MSc projects.

He founded two international conference series (International conference on Next Generation Mobile Applications, Services and Technologies –NGMAST) and (Analytical and Stochastic Modelling Techniques and Applications –ASMTA) and was the General Chair for over 25 international conferences. In particular, he was the General Chair of the 8th European Congress on Modelling and Simulation held in Cardiff, UK in 2013.
